Foreman
The foreman is responsible for overseeing any landscape and/or maintenance projects, overseeing his/her crew, training new hires, and making sure the job is successfully completed and up to company standards. The foreman will also make sure the crew is following safety protocols, communicate with customers, upselling any needed services, which includes forms and job resources being filled out and turned in daily. The foreman must have leadership skills and knowledge of trees, shrubs and flowers. They must follow and provide instructions to crew members as handed down from your manager. Must have exceptional problem-solving skills while out in the field and basic sales skills. Decision making on the spot is critical to timely completion of jobs.
Essential Functions:
- Take charge out on the job site, duties include but are not limited to: coordinating job duties, hands on work, and use of machinery
- Manage crew efficiently!
- Record details/resources for each job in iPad such as hours, inventory, materials, etc.
- Always maintain a clean and safe jobsite.
- Safely drive truck and trailer to and from jobsite each day.
Requirements:
- Must have valid driver’s license, provide DMV report.
- Must be able to communicate with customers.
- Must have exceptional problem-solving skills.
- Must be able to use a tablet for recording job resources.
- Must have leadership skills.
- Must be willing and able to pass a drug test.
- Must have landscape knowledge like Proper Pruning, Mulch requirements, Proper tree trimming and planting.
- Exceptional attention to detail.
- Good time management skills; must be able to multi-task.
- Must be willing to educate employees/customers with job and care instructions.
- Must show up to work with a clean and professional appearance.
- Work with crew and supervisor to meet company goals each quarter.
Responsibilities:
- Supervise and manages crew duties.
- Makes sure that the crew is following and obeying all required safety protocols.
- Makes sure that at the end of each job that each job is up to company standards.
- Interacting with customers at the beginning and end of each job.
- Leading by example day in and day out.
- Showing up on time at the shop each day and being on the jobsite on time each day.
- Report any accidents or misconduct by crew members.
- Communicating instructions from supervisor down to each member of the crew.
- Keep equipment and vehicles clean.
- Always be willing to expand knowledge.
- Enter accurate record of resources and employees time used at each job in tablet.
- Maintain a clean/safe jobsite.
- Training new hires to company’s standards.
- Making sure the truck is stocked and loaded with essential tools, materials, and gas for each days’ work.
- Check oil in trucks weekly and machines before every use.
- Fix any broken equipment at the end of each day or report larger issues to supervisor.
- Clean out any waste or garbage from truck or trailer at the end of each day.
- Upselling services to improve overall customer satisfaction.
- Report any possible drug abuse or use on company time.
Qualifications:
- 3 years’ experience in all aspects of landscaping or maintenance practices.
- Must have in depth knowledge on use of commercial equipment such as mowers, string trimmers, hedge trimmers, chain saws, pole saw, bed edger, etc.
- Must know how to drive with a truck and trailer safely.
- 3 years knowledge of softscape and hardscape projects common practices.
- Must be able to identify perennials, shrubs, and trees.
- Valid Illinois DL and clean driving record for 3 years.
- Must be able to sell needed services on site. Meet upsell goal.
Compensation:
- Choice of hourly pay or year-round salary.
- Year End and Quarterly Bonus Pay.

Career Path:
Foreman: 3-5 years’ experience in landscape work. Senior Foreman: 6+ years’ experience as either landscape or maintenance foreman. Project Manager: 5 + years’ experience as either landscape or maintenance foreman and 1+ years office experience in the green industry or BS or AS degree in horticulture.
Laborer
Laborers will perform essential duties such as loading and unloading materials, digging holes/trenches, transporting waste to and from the truck, cleaning up job sites, as well as many other essential tasks. A laborer is one of the most essential positions of the crew and will determine if projects are completed on time. Jobs of a laborer may vary from day to day. They will perform a variety of duties involving small engine use, lifting, carrying, and managing equipment to provide support for the crew. Knowledge of small engines and tools are beneficial. All laborers must have reliable transportation to and from work.
Duties:
- Operate various machines.
- Clean tools and assist foreman at the end of each day.
- Arrive to work with a clean uniform each day.
- Communicate with customers and potential customers each day.
- Assist foreman with entering resources used in tablet after each job.
- Sharpen tools/blades upon request of foreman.
- Pick up landscape waste from each job daily.
- Clean truck and trailer each day upon foreman’s request.
- Fill machines with gas.
- Be on time, dressed ready to go at start time.
Compensation:
- Hourly pay or Year-round salary (after 1 year)
- Quarterly bonus pay.
- Medical plan after 60 days.
- Paid holidays after 60 days.
- Paid vacation after 1 year.
- 401k retirement plan with company match after 1 year.
- Sign on Bonus at 90 and 180 days and another at 15 months of work.
- Refer a friend pay for up to 12 months.
- Pay increases are based on performance, not tenure.
Career Path:
Foreman: 1-3 years’ experience in landscape or maintenance work. Lawn Operator: Pass General Standards Test, Department of Ag. Senior Lawn Operator: 4-8 years’ experience and 2 years either landscape or maintenance work. Tree Operator: 2 + years’ experience in lawn care or landscape. Tree Specialist: 3+ years’ experience in tree care or BS Degree or AS Degree in Horticulture and 1 year lawn or tree care field experience. ISA Certified Arborist with 3+ years’ experience in tree care field. Operations Foreman: 2+ years in either lawn or tree care or landscape or maintenance work and 1 year as office assistant in green industry.
Lawn Operator
A lawn operator is responsible for applying fertilizers and pesticides to commercial and residential lawns. They must pass the Illinois General Standards test given by the Department of Agriculture. Lawn operators will use a stand on spreader/sprayer using American Tree and Turfs application methods. Lawn Operators are responsible maintaining a safe and clean work environment. Upselling needed services to existing and new customers, as well as, meeting quarterly and year end company goals are required for raises and advancement. Common lawn issues must be documented for upselling and lawn condition tracking. Accurate measuring and logging of materials for each site is necessary for every lawn operator.
Requirements:
- Must pass General Standards test given by the Illinois Department of Agriculture
- Must be able to operate a ride-on spreader/sprayer.
- Must be able to diagnose and fix small mechanical issues in the field.
- Basic math skills are required for measuring and logging material usage.
- Be familiar with product labels and MSDS sheets.
- Diagnose lawn problems. (Tree issues are a bonus)
- Have a valid Illinois DL and clean driving record, 3 years back.
- Provide exceptional customer service.
- Submit DMV report and pass drug test upon request.
- Must be able to use iPad/tablet.
- Must be able to listen and follow instructions.
- Must be willing to upsell needed services.
Duties:
- Restocking truck with resources at end of each day.
- Pass out flyers to 3 houses per stop.
- Perform routine preventative maintenance such as oil and filter changes to spreader/sprayer.
- Clean truck/equipment weekly or as needed.
- Notify supervisor when vehicle or equipment issues arise.
- Check oil truck weekly and machine oil daily.
- Securing all equipment for transportation and against theft.
- Must report to work with a clean uniform ready to leave shop at start time.
- Upsell services and meet quarterly and year end company goals.
- Complete given work each day, especially call aheads.
- Measure and record accurate material usage.
- Maintain a valid driver’s license.
- Lift 60lbs from the ground to machine hopper height.
Compensation:
- Hourly Wage or Year-Round Salary.
- Upsell Bonus pay program.
- 1.5% production commission.
- Quarterly and Year End bonus pay.
- Signing Bonus at 90 and 180 days and another at 15 months of work.
- Referral Pay up to 12 months.
